O hotel é um sucesso. O cinema está ameaçado. Notícias recentes disseram-me que o Éden Park está para ser demolido e substituído por mais um hotel. O dinheiro e o turismo de massas estão prontos para destruir mais um pedaço da herança cultural de Cabo Verde. Está online uma petição, iniciada por João Branco, para tentar salvar este edifício, localizado na Praça Nova do Mindelo, ilha de São Vicente. Save Éden Park
There are two 'horizontal' buildings in the middle of this photo: at right the Porto Grande Hotel; at left the Éden Park Cine-Theatre. [Click the photo for bigger size.]
The hotel is thriving. The theatre is doomed. Recent news told me that the Éden Park is going to be demolished and replaced by a high rise hotel. Money and mass tourism are ready to destroy another piece of the Cape Verde cultural heritage. A petition, initiated by João Branco, is online to try to save this building, located in the Praça Nova of Mindelo, São Vicente Island. Monumento à Primeira Travessia Aérea do Atlântico Sul, por Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral, em 1922.
Biblioteca Municipal atrás.
Em baixo, outro monumento à Primeira Travessia Aérea do Atlântico Sul, junto ao Cais Acostável do Porto Grande, também no Mindelo.

Porto Grande ("Big Harbor") is the the great bay and best harbor of Cape Verde, located in Mindelo, São Vicente Island. Thus, it was the obvious choice for Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral when they had to land their seaplane on their pioneer journey — the first air crossing from Europe (Portugal) to South America (Brazil) in 1922.
The sculpture (photo bellow) is a monument to the flight of Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral.
In front of the Municipal Library (top photo) there is an older monument that celebrates also this flight.
