The night approached and the snowstorm continued in the almost ghost town of Goldfield, Nevada (my previous post). We tried to find rooms to spend the night. The only place that seemed to be open in town was this ramshackle saloon and motel, on a gravel street at the edge of town. It was under candle light and had the strange people inside. As we went in, they stoped talking and stared at us, as if they were seeing Martians, especially when they heard us speaking in Portuguese, a language they obviously didn't understand. The owner said she had rooms for us, but no hot water and no electricity (in winter!), because the snow storm had disrupted the power supplies. I couldn't believe it!A few hours before we left Las Vegas, a 21st century city, made of electricity, and now we were in a kind of 19th century ghost town of the Old Wild West, in a saloon darker than those in the Western movies. We discussed among ourselves and we didn't stay; it was a little too much of adventure for some of my mates. But I'd like to have got the experience.
Despite the so different details, that saloon/motel made me remember words of the famous song by the Eagles:

Goldfield has served as the fictional town and site of several films. The former Goldfield Hotel has been investigated for for paranormal activity by "ghost hunters". The Santa Fe Motel and Saloon (this photo) is one of the oldest in Nevada.

A noite aproximava-se e continuava a tempestade de neve na quase cidade-fantasma de Goldfield, estado de Nevada (minha foto anterior). Tentámos encontrar quartos para passar a noite. O único lugar que parecia estar aberto na cidade era este saloon e motel caduco, numa rua de terra batida na orla da cidade. Estava à luz de velas e com pessoas estranhas no seu interior. Assim que entrámos, pararam de conversar e olharam para nós como se estivessem vendo marcianos, especialmente quando nos ouviram falar em português, uma língua que, obviamente, não entendiam. A proprietária disse que tinha quartos para nós, mas sem água quente e sem energia eléctrica (no inverno !), porque a tempestade de neve tinha interrompido o fornecimento de energia. Eu não podia acreditar! Poucas horas antes tínhamos saído de Las Vegas, uma cidade do século XXI, feita de electricidade, e agora estávamos numa espécie de cidade-fantasma do século XIX no Velho Oeste Selvagem, num saloon mais escuro do que os dos filmes de cowboys. Falámos entre nós e não ficámos; era um pouco de aventura demais para alguns dos meus companheiros. Mas eu gostaria de ter passado pela experiência.
Apesar dos detalhes tão diferentes, este saloon/motel fez-me lembrar versos da famosa canção dos Eagles:

Goldfield serviu como cidade fictícia e sítio de vários filmes. O ex-Goldfield Hotel foi investigado por fenómenos paranormais por "caçadores de fantasmas". O Santa Fe Motel e Saloon (esta foto) é um dos mais antigos do estado do Nevada.
